The German Society for the History of Hospitals (DGKG) aims at supporting scientific projects, exhibitions, and conferences on the history of hospitals. It assists museums with departments dedicated to the history of hospitals. And it advances efforts to preserve historically important hospital buildings as medical, cultural, and social monuments, and to open them for the public.
The DGKG acts on different fields for the history of hospitals. Besides aspects of medicine and care-giving the broad cultural, architectonic and social history of hospitals shall become generally known.

In the future, the development of denominational, of protestant, catholic, and Jewish hospitals, the history of care-giving, of clinical medicine, and of the patients will be promoted. The Society aims at co-operation with hospital architects.

The Society supports the establishment of the institutions following:
  • Of an archive and museum for hospital history in the Red-Cross-Clinics in Berlin-Westend;
  • The Berlin archive for hospital construction of the 20th century at Berlin Technical University;
  • The department for the history of medicine and hospitals of the City Museum of Guetersloh.
Since 1982, the Society organises every two years international conferences and excursions in European countries. The last excursions visited Granada, Kos, Rhodos, Lisboa, Wroclaw, and Paris.

The DGKG has been founded in 1964, after models in Italy and France, by the medical and art historian Robert Herrlinger. The next chairmen were Hans Schadewaldt (1970 – 1978) and Axel Hinrich Murken (1978 – 2009). From 2009 to 2014 Ernst Kraas chaired the society.
